2025 NGVWA ANNUAL LECTURE + SUMMER SOIREE ‘OPENING THE ATELIER: THE ART OF AUSTRALIAN FASHION’
TUESDAY 25 FEBRUARY
6:00PM
NGV INTERNATIONAL, ST KILDA ROAD, MELBOURNE
Australian fashion is experiencing a renaissance. An increasing number of national designers are emphasising artisanship in an age dominated by mass production. From bespoke tailoring to handmade accessories, many brands are investing in their own ateliers, giving designers more control over the creative process.
At this year’s NGVWA Annual Lecture, prominent Australian designers, each heading their own ateliers – Amanda Rettig, Creative Director of cutting-edge accessories brand A-ESQUE; Sonia Cappellazzo, founder of renowned couture house Cappellazzo; and Kudrat Makkar, Creative Director of prêt à-couture label Mastani – will discuss the process of designing exceptional pieces that merge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.
Moderated by Danielle Whitfield, NGV Curator Fashion and Textiles, the lecture will consider Australian luxury fashion, before exploring what it takes to run a modern design house, the challenges of preserving traditional skills in a fast-paced industry, and how these factors influence their craft. After the lecture, guests are invited to a Summer Soirée in the NGV’s Garden Restaurant where conversation will continue over cocktails and canapés. Join us and immerse yourself in the artistry of Australian fashion.
